Products Description
E308L-17 Stainless Steel Welding Electrode
The E308L-17 is a lime-titania coated stainless steel electrode designed for welding AISI 304 and 304L austenitic stainless steels. With a controlled low carbon content (≤0.04%), the E308L-17 electrode minimizes the risk of intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone - a critical requirement for applications in chemical processing, food-grade equipment, and pressure vessels.

Key Features of E308L-17 Electrode
- Low carbon deposit:≤0.04% C reduces carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion susceptibility
- Smooth, stable arc: Lime-titania (-17) coating delivers a quiet arc with minimal spatter
- Flat-to-slightly-convex bead profile: Produces clean, aesthetically pleasing welds with minimal post-weld grinding
- Easy slag removal : Self-lifting slag system accelerates cleanup on multi-pass joints
- AC/DC compatible : Operates on AC, DCEP, or DCEN, offering flexibility across power sources
- All-position welding: Rated for flat, horizontal, vertical-up, and overhead positions

FAQ
Q: What are the primary applications for E308L-17 welding electrodes?
A: E308L-17 is used for welding 304 and 304L austenitic stainless steels. It is the standard electrode for food-grade equipment, chemical plant piping, pressure vessels, and any application requiring a combination of corrosion resistance and a low-carbon weld deposit.
Q: Can E308L-17 be used to weld 316 stainless steel?
A: No. For 316 and 316L stainless steels, E316L-17 or E316L-16 electrodes should be used to ensure the weld deposit contains sufficient molybdenum (Mo) content to meet the requirements for pitting corrosion resistance. The weld deposit of E308L electrodes lacks sufficient molybdenum and therefore cannot meet the operational demands associated with 316 stainless steel environments.
Q: Is E308L-17 suitable for use with AC (Alternating Current) welders?
A: Yes. E308L-17 electrodes feature a "-17" (lime-titania) flux coating formulation specifically designed to provide excellent arc stability under AC power, making them an excellent choice for workshops utilizing transformer-type welding machines.
Q: Is preheating required when welding with E308L-17 electrodes?
A: Austenitic stainless steels typically do not require preheating. In fact, the interpass temperature during welding should be controlled below 350°F (175°C) to ensure the corrosion resistance of the weld deposit and to minimize welding distortion.
Q: Is shielding gas required when welding with E308L-17 electrodes?
A: No. E308L-17 is a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick) electrode; its flux coating generates its own shielding gas and slag during the welding process, thereby providing the necessary protection. If you require TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) or MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding for 304/304L stainless steel, please refer to our ER308L series of welding wires.
Q: Can welds produced using E308L-17 electrodes pass radiographic (X-ray) inspection?
A: Provided that the correct welding procedures and parameters are applied, the deposited metal from E308L-17 electrodes is fully capable of meeting the acceptance criteria for radiographic inspection. However, for applications with extremely stringent radiographic inspection requirements, E308L-16 electrodes are generally recommended; this is because they utilize an alkaline slag system, which effectively reduces the content of non-metallic inclusions-such as slag inclusions-within the weld metal.
