Products Description
E10-UM-60-Z is a high-carbon, high-chromium (Fe-Cr-C) surfacing electrode that conforms to the DIN 8555 standard classification. Its deposited metal exhibits a dense network structure composed of primary Cr₇C₃ carbides, reinforced by secondary V/Nb/Mo carbides, thus possessing both excellent wear resistance at room temperature and high-temperature hardness retention. This is precisely the wear resistance characteristic required for equipment such as coal mine loaders, cement clinker cooler grates, sintering plant components, and mining crusher hammers.

The DIN 8555 designation itself contains key information: the hardness grade "60" corresponds to a weld metal hardness of 57–62 HRC; the suffix "Z" clearly indicates that the material has heat resistance and can maintain stable performance at operating temperatures above 600°C,making it superior to common "-G" and "-GR" grade weld overlay materials (the latter are mainly optimized for room temperature wear-resistant conditions).
Ocean Welding's E10-UM-60-Z belongs to the company's "surfacing welding electrode" product series and is sold as a product directly supplied by the factory. This product strictly follows the ISO 9001 quality management system and triple inspection quality control process applicable to all our welding consumables.

Standards & classification
| Standard | Designation |
|---|---|
| DIN 8555 (Germany) | E10-UM-60-Z |
| EN 14700 (Europe, unified) | E Fe16 (nearest match) |
| AWS A5.13 (equivalent class) | EFeCr-A |
| GB / YB (China) | Surfacing electrode, hardness class 60+ (per Ocean Welding QA) |
DIN 8555 code: character by character
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E | Manual arc welding stick electrode (SMAW) |
| 10 | Alloy group 10 - high-carbon, high-chromium Fe base, optional carbide formers V / Nb / W / Mo |
| UM | Coated (umhüllt) electrode |
| 60 | Hardness class 60 = as-deposited 57–62 HRC |
| Z | Heat-resistant deposit, stable above 600 °C |
Chemical composition (typical, as-deposited)
| Element | C | Cr | Si | Mn | Mo | V + Nb | W | Fe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| wt% | 3.0 – 5.0 | 25 – 35 | 0.5 – 1.5 | 0.5 – 2.0 | 0.5 – 3.0 | 0.5 – 3.0 | ≤ 1.5 | Bal. |
Mechanical & physical properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| As-deposited hardness | 57 – 62 HRC (DIN 8555 hardness class 60) |
| Retained hardness after 500 °C temper | ≥ 55 HRC (typical) |
| Maximum service temperature | 650 °C continuous / 800 °C short peak |
| Recommended layers | 2 – 3 layers, total 6 – 12 mm max |
| Machinability | Grind only (ceramic or diamond wheels) |
| Stress-relief cracks | Fine perpendicular check cracks are normal for chromium-carbide overlays; they release residual stress and do not cause spalling |
Recommended Welding Procedure
| Step | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Substrate preparation | Grind or turn off at least 1.5 mm of fatigued layer; sandblast to Ra ≤ 6.3 μm; remove all cracks, oil and moisture |
| Electrode drying | Re-bake at 300 – 350 °C for 1 h before use; keep in a holding oven at 100 – 150 °C during welding |
| Preheat | 150 – 250 °C for low-alloy steel base; 300 – 350 °C × 10 h for large / high-restraint parts |
| Interpass temperature | ≤ 300 °C, monitored by temp-stick or contact thermometer |
| Buffer layer (optional) | 1 – 2 layers of a tough Fe-Cr martensitic filler on high-restraint or thick-section parts |
| Working layer | 2 – 3 layers, each 3 – 4 mm; 30 – 50 % bead overlap; short arc, stringer bead or slight weave (≤ 2 × electrode diameter) |
| Post-weld | Cover with a ceramic blanket for slow cooling; optional 250 – 300 °C × 2 h dehydrogenation for critical parts |
| Crack control | Fine transverse check cracks are the expected stress-relief mechanism of chromium-carbide overlays - avoid concentrated deposition and use segmented / skip welding |
