AWS E312-16 Stainless Steel Welding Electrode
Ocean Welding E312-16 is a 29Cr-9Ni ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel welding electrode with a rutile-calcium type coating (compliant with AWS A5.4 / ASME SFA-5.4 standards). This welding electrode is the industry's preferred solution for applications involving unknown base materials, difficult welding conditions, or materials with high crack sensitivity. Its weld metal contains approximately 40% δ-ferrite (FN ≈ 40) in an austenitic matrix, exhibiting excellent crack resistance and tolerance to base metal dilution; it is suitable for high carbon steel, tool and die steel, Hadfield manganese steel, armor plates, free-cutting alloys, and various dissimilar metal joints that cannot be reliably welded using E309-16 or E308-16 electrodes. This welding electrode is compatible with AC or DC reverse polarity (DCEP) power supplies and is suitable for all welding positions except vertical down welding. The chemical composition of 29Cr-9Ni results in a Creq/Nieq ratio of approximately 2.1, which leads to the preferential formation of a large amount of δ-ferrite in the molten pool during solidification. This ferrite network structure can trap sulfur and phosphorus, break continuous martensite bands, and block the propagation path of hydrogen-induced cracks-this is the metallurgical reason why E312-16 is the "safest choice," especially when the composition or dilution rate of the base material cannot be fully controlled.
Applications
When conventional stainless steel welding rods cannot ensure a crack-free weld, Ocean Welding E312-16 should be used:
Tool and die steel repair: D2 (Cr12), H13, A2, O1, Cr13, M2 high-speed steel (HSS), as well as mold inserts and shear blades.
Manganese steel (Hadfield steel): Crusher jaw plates, excavator bucket teeth, mill liners, railway switches/frogs, and wear-resistant rollers.
Armor plate and AR500 steel: Butt joints and buffer layers for armor-grade steel.
High-carbon and spring steels: AISI 1045 / 1060 / 1080 / 65Mn and quenched-and-tempered alloy steels.
Free-machining steels: 12L14, 1215, and other high-sulfur or high-silicon steel grades unsuitable for conventional filler metals.
Dissimilar metal joining under high-constraint conditions: Stainless steel to carbon steel, manganese steel to carbon steel, tool steel to low-carbon steel, and joining 304/316 to Q235/45#/T10 steels (specifically where E309-16 electrodes offer insufficient safety margins regarding dilution rates).
Surfacing transition/buffer layers: Pre-treatment for cast iron, Ni-hard, Ni-resist, and armor plate prior to final hardfacing.
