Requirements for Base Metal Cleanliness
E7018 electrodes are extremely sensitive to impurities on the base metal surface (oil, rust, moisture, scale, paint, etc.), which can cause weld porosity, slag inclusion, or hydrogen-induced cracks.
Mechanical grinding (wire brush, angle grinder) or chemical cleaning (acetone, alcohol) must be used to remove all impurities from the groove and at least 20mm on both sides until the metallic luster is exposed.
If the base metal is damp (e.g., after rain or in high-humidity environments), it must be dried with a flame (temperature 50~80℃) and cooled to room temperature before welding.
Groove Design and Machining
For base metals with thickness >6mm, grooves (e.g., V-type, U-type) must be prepared to ensure full penetration. The groove angle is typically 60°±5°, with a root face thickness of 1~2mm and a gap of 2~3mm (adjusted based on welding position).
Groove edges must be free of cracks, laminations, or other defects. Burrs and flash must be removed after machining to avoid arc instability.
