How to use
Welding preparation
- Welding rod drying: Although welding rod is not too sensitive to moisture, but in order to ensure the quality of welding, if the welding rod is damp, it should be dried at a temperature of 70 - 100 ℃ for 0.5 - 1 hour. After drying, it can be placed in the heat preservation cylinder at 100-150℃, and can be taken out as it is used.
- Weldment cleaning: thoroughly remove the weldment surface oil, rust, moisture, oxide and other impurities, can use sandpaper grinding, wire brush cleaning, organic solvent cleaning and other methods, cleaning range is generally 20 - 30mm on both sides of the weld.
- Selection of welding equipment: according to the thickness, shape and welding position of the weldment, select the appropriate welding power source and welding equipment, etc. welding rod can be used for both AC and DC, DC reverse arc is more stable, better welding quality.
- Determine the welding parameters
- Welding rod diameter: choose according to the thickness of the weldment, generally the greater the thickness of the weldment, the larger the diameter of the selected welding rod. For example, the thickness of the weldment in 3 - 4mm, you can choose 3.2mm diameter electrode; thickness in 5 - 8mm, you can choose 4.0mm diameter electrode.
- Welding current: welding current size is mainly based on the diameter of the electrode to determine. Take 3.2mm diameter electrode as an example, the welding current can be 90-120A for flat welding; the current should be 10%-20% smaller than that of flat welding for vertical welding, horizontal welding and backward welding.
Welding operations
Arc initiation
- Direct hit method: the end of the welding rod and the surface of the weldment vertical collision, and then quickly lift the rod 2 - 4mm, generating an electric arc. This method is suitable for welding in various positions, but the operation is more difficult, requiring rapid and accurate action.
- Scratch method: the end of the welding rod like a match in the surface of the weldment gently scratch, when the arc ignited, quickly lift the welding rod 2 - 4mm, to maintain a stable arc burning. This method is easy to start the arc, but may leave scratches on the surface of the weldment, is not suitable for higher surface quality requirements of the weldment.
Rod transport
- Straight-line rod transport method: the rod moves in a straight line along the welding direction, applicable to thin plate butt welding, multi-layer welding of the first layer of welding and multi-layer multi-channel welding.
- Straight line back and forth method: the end of the electrode along the weld to do back and forth straight line swing, characterised by fast welding speed, narrow weld seam, suitable for thin plate welding and larger gap weld seam.
- Sawtooth method: the end of the welding rod to do a sawtooth swing, and a little stay on both sides to ensure that the edge of the weld fusion is good. This method is suitable for the welding of thicker weldments in flat welding, vertical welding, back welding and other positions.
- Crescent-shaped transport method: the end of the welding rod along the welding direction to do crescent-shaped swing, swing speed should be uniform, stay a little longer on both sides. This method can make the weld metal get fully heated and melted, suitable for flat welding, vertical welding, back welding and other positions of the welding, can get a higher quality of the weld.
Arc closing
- Circle closing method: when the welding rod moves to the end of the weld, make a circle movement until the arc pit is filled and then pull off the arc. Suitable for thick plate welding arc.
- Repeated arc closing method: at the end of the weld, repeated arc quenching, arc several times, until the arc pit is filled. Mainly used for thin plate and high-current welding arc.
- Back to the welding arc method: welding rod to the end of the weld, in the arc pit at a slight stay, and then appropriate back to the welding a short distance, and then pull off the arc. Suitable for alkaline electrode arc closing.
Post-weld inspection and treatment
- Appearance inspection: check the surface of the weld for cracks, pores, slag, biting edge and other defects, and whether the residual height, width and foot size of the weld meet the requirements.
- Clean up slag: use slag hammer, wire brush and other tools to clean up the slag and spatter on the surface of the weld, so as to make the surface of the weld neat and tidy.
- Post-heat treatment (if necessary): For some weldments with special requirements, such as rigidity, crack-prone weldments, post-welding heat treatment may be required to eliminate welding stress and improve the organisational properties of the weld.
FAQ
Q: What should I do if the weld has a biting edge?
A: Edge biting may be caused by too much welding current, too long arc, improper transport speed, etc.. Appropriate reduction of welding current, shorten the arc length, adjust the speed of transporting the bar, stay a little at the edge of the weld to ensure that the edge of the fusion is good.
Q: How should I store welding rod?
A: Welding rods should be stored in dry, well-ventilated warehouses, where the temperature should be kept above 5°C and the relative humidity should not exceed 60 per cent. Welding rods should be placed on shelves at least 300mm from the floor and walls to prevent moisture.
Q: What is the shelf life of E6013 welding electrodes?
A: Under normal storage conditions, the shelf life of unopened E6013 welding rod is generally 1 - 2 years. However, poor storage conditions, such as exposure to moisture and rain, can shorten the shelf life and affect performance.
