Is E2209-15 Still The Right Duplex Rod For Chemical Plants?

Why do materials with the 22Cr-9Ni-3Mo-N composition consistently outperform 316L and super duplex stainless steels?

The expansion of desalination capacity in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, debottlenecking projects for chemical processing in India and Vietnam, and a new wave of FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading) and offshore facility construction projects in Brazil and West Africa are collectively driving a common requirement on welding consumable procurement lists: duplex stainless steel electrodes. Within these lists, one AWS classification consistently tops the rankings-AWS A5.4 E2209-15. This grade also complies with the EN ISO 3581-A E 22 9 3 N L B 22 standard and is marketed under the ESAB brand as the OK 67.55 model.

Why Does the 22-9-3-N Chemistry Still Beat Both Sides of the Market?

Chemical plant, desalination and offshore engineers have three consumables to choose from: 316L austenitic (cheap, but pitting fails in chlorides above 60 °C), super duplex 2507 (excellent, but 3-4× the price and demanding preheat control), and duplex 2209. E2209-15 sits in a sweet spot that the other two cannot: PREN ≥ 35, yield strength around 550 MPa (2× 316L), chloride pitting resistance comparable to super duplex at 60% of the cost, and - critically - no preheat above 100 °C and no PWHT on typical fabrication thicknesses

The chemistry is calibrated on three constraints: Cr 22 % for chloride pitting resistance, Ni 9 % for austenite phase balance (target ferrite 30–60 vol %), and Mo 3 % + N 0.14 % for combined pitting and CPT (Critical Pitting Temperature) performance. Deviate 1 % in Ni or 0.05 % in N and the ferrite balance falls outside 30–60 % - the deposit becomes brittle. This is why E2209-15 is a specification, not a formulation.

Where Is E2209-15 Actually Being Used in 2026?

SegmentApplicationWhy E2209-15 wins
DesalinationMSF / MED / RO evaporator shells and internalsChloride pitting at 60-80 °C brine
ChemicalSulphuric acid coolers, phosphoric acid piping, urea reactor internalsPitting + stress corrosion
Offshore / FPSOTopside piping, produced-water systems, seawater lift caissonChloride + H₂S sour service
Pulp & paperBleach plant chlorination stages, black liquor evaporatorsChloride + oxidising media
LNG & cryogenicLNG loading arms, secondary containment (limited to -50 °C)Toughness above -50 °C

Duplex 2205 base metal (UNS S32205 / EN 1.4462) is the standard match; E2209-15 also welds duplex-to-carbon-steel dissimilar joints as a butter layer.

Are AWS E2209-15 and EN ISO E 22 9 3 N L B 22 Really the Same?

Yes. The ESAB OK 67.55 product data sheet dual-classifies the same electrode as both AWS A5.4 E2209-15 and EN ISO 3581-A E 22 9 3 N L B 22. Three minor differences exist between the two standards:

  • Nitrogen lower limit: AWS 0.08 % vs ISO 0.10 %
  • Silicon upper limit: AWS 0.90 % vs ISO 1.00 %
  • Position code: AWS "-15" (basic, DCEP) vs ISO "B 22" (basic, all-position)

None of the three differences affects field interchangeability - a plant WPS written against AWS can be executed with an ISO-classified electrode and vice versa, provided the mill test certificate lists both standards.

What Are 2026 Procurement Teams Actually Specifying?

Three items keep appearing on updated fabricator procurement checklists:

  1. Dual mill certification (AWS + EN ISO) so a single stock item can be pulled onto multiple project WPSs without re-qualification
  2. Ferrite balance report (FN 30-60 %) on each production lot - not batch
  3. Hermetically sealed 5 kg vacuum inner packaging with moisture indicator for humid-climate fabrication yards

Chinese manufacturers such as Hangzhou Linan Dayang Welding Material Co., Ltd. (Ocean Welding) now supply E2209-15 with each shipment cross-referenced to EN ISO 3581-A E 22 9 3 N L B 22, ferrite balance report, and ISO 9001 / CE / SGS certification - one of several Asian producers competing on the duplex-electrode shelf that ESAB (OK 67.55), Böhler (FOX 2209), Metrode (Supermet 2205) and Lincoln Electric (Redipel 22-9-3) have historically dominated.
