Ask any desalination or offshore fabrication engineer what steel they specify for chloride-service piping, evaporator shells or seawater lift caissons, and the answer is almost identical: 2205 duplex stainless steel, not 316L. The reason is a set of hard corrosion numbers that have been documented for two decades - and a matching welding-filler classification that most Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin-American fabricators now buy factory-direct: AWS A5.4 E2209-15, dual-classified as EN ISO 3581-A E 22 9 3 N L B 22 (ESAB brand name OK 67.55)
The Three Numbers That Decide the 2205-vs-316L Question
| Property | 2205 duplex (UNS S32205) | 316L austenitic | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent) | 35 – 37 | 24 – 26 | 1.4× |
| Yield strength (min) | 450 MPa | 170 MPa | 2.6× |
| Chloride pitting temperature (CPT) | ~ 40 °C | ~ 20 °C | 2× |
| Chloride stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance | Excellent | Poor above 60 °C | - |
| Typical desalination brine service life | > 10 years | 1 – 2 years to pinhole | 5-10× |
Why Doesn't 316L Just Work?
316L is a single-phase austenitic with roughly 2 % Mo. In warm chloride environments above ~ 60 °C, three failure modes attack it faster than the corrosion allowance was ever designed for:
- Pitting corrosion on internal surfaces exposed to brine
- Crevice corrosion under gaskets, flanges, deposits
- Chloride stress-corrosion cracking (Cl-SCC) - the classic "leak in 12-24 months" pattern that has retired thousands of tonnes of 316L piping in Gulf desalination plants
2205 is dual-phase austenitic-ferritic. The ferrite half sees no Cl-SCC (a purely austenitic failure mode); the austenite half provides toughness. Add 3 % Mo and 0.14 % N and you get PREN 35 - enough to survive at brine temperatures where 316L cannot.
Which Filler Do You Actually Buy for 2205?
AWS A5.4 E2209-15 is a nickel-enriched welding electrode designed to match 2205 base metal; its nickel content is specifically formulated at a higher level (9% compared to the base metal's 5%) to ensure the weld metal achieves an ideal ferrite content of 30%–60% in the as-welded condition. An imbalance in this ratio can lead to weld embrittlement. Consequently, high-quality electrodes of this type are supplied with a ferrite content test report for every specific production lot-not merely the general production batch.
This electrode also complies with the EN ISO 3581-A E 22 9 3 N L B 22 standard classification, meaning that stocking this single product satisfies Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) requirements for both the US ASME standards and the European EN 1090 standards. There are three subtle differences between these two standards:
- Minimum nitrogen content: AWS 0.08% vs. ISO 0.10%
- Maximum silicon content: AWS 0.90% vs. ISO 1.00%
- Position designation: AWS "-15" (basic, DCEP) vs. ISO "B 22" (basic, all-position)
None affects field interchangeability
Where Is 2205 (and E2209-15) Actually Used in 2026?
| Segment | Application | Base metal grade |
|---|---|---|
| Desalination | MSF / MED / RO evaporator shells, brine internals, seawater intake | 2205 (UNS S32205 / EN 1.4462) |
| Chemical | Sulphuric acid coolers, phosphoric acid piping, urea reactor internals | 2205 |
| Offshore / FPSO | Topside piping, produced-water systems, seawater lift caisson | 2205 + Alloy 625 dissimilar |
| Pulp & paper | Bleach plant chlorination stages, black liquor evaporators | 2205 |
| LNG / cryogenic | LNG loading arms, secondary containment (down to -50 °C) | 2205 |
For higher-chloride, higher-temperature tails - say hot brine above 90 °C or 25 % NaCl at 80 °C - the answer moves up one tier to super duplex E2594-16 (PREN 40+). But for the vast majority of 60-80 °C chloride service that still consumes 80 % of duplex electrode volume, the answer stays with 2205 + E2209-15.
