How to Repair a Bronze Propeller with ECuSn-C Phosphor Bronze Electrode

 

Phosphor bronze propellers used on fishing vessels, tugboats, and various workboats frequently suffer from cavitation pitting, edge chipping, and impact damage. A commonly used filler material for field repairs is AWS A5.6 ECuSn-C, a flux-coated electrode (suitable for manual arc welding) made of phosphor bronze containing 8% tin. It has excellent resistance to seawater corrosion, and the weld color naturally matches the bronze color of the casting itself.

 

Clean and inspect

 

 

Treat the damaged area of ​​the blade by sandblasting or wire brushing until the bright bronze-colored base metal is exposed. Perform dye-penetrant testing to determine the extent of the cracks, then grind the area using a carbide burr until sound base metal is revealed. Finally, wipe the surface with acetone.

 

Preheat the blade

 

 

Phosphor bronze has extremely high thermal conductivity, causing heat to dissipate rapidly from the molten pool. Preheating is essential:

  • Thin blade tips (< 10 mm): 100 – 150 °C
  • Thick propeller hub and root (> 20 mm): ≥ 200 °C (400 °F) and maintain as interpass

Use a rosebud torch or an induction heating pad. Do not exceed 300°C, or the flux will become ineffective.

  • DCEP only - AC or DCEN will not sustain the arc.
  • Higher heat input, faster travel speed than steel - keep the pool fluid before it freezes.
  • Short stringer beads, redry electrodes 120 – 150 °C × 1 h before use.

Machine to the blade profile

 


Cool slowly in still air (do not quench in water). Use a template for grinding and filing to restore the overlay to the original blade profile. The ECuSn-C weld overlay, which can be machined or hand-polished to achieve a smooth surface, is fully machinable and its color matches that of the CuSn8 casting.

 

FAQ

Q: Can I weld bronze propellers with an aluminium-bronze electrode (ECuAl-A2)?

A: ECuAl-A2 gives higher strength and wear resistance, but the deposit is yellow-gold - visually mismatched with phosphor-bronze castings. Use ECuSn-C for cosmetic-critical repairs; use ECuAl-A2 for high-load manganese-bronze or nickel-aluminium-bronze propellers.

Q: Why does ECuSn-C need preheat when steel electrodes don't?

A: Copper alloys conduct heat ~ 5× faster than steel. Without preheat, the parent metal drains heat from the pool and you get lack-of-fusion defects.

Q: Do I need PWHT after the repair?

A: Optional. A stress-relief at 300–350 °C improves ductility if the deposit will be heavily cold-worked, but for standard cast blade repair it is not required.
