Can You Weld 304 Stainless To Mild Steel With E309L-16?

Across pressure-vessel shops, food-processing OEMs and petrochemical piping crews, one question keeps returning to the workshop floor: can you really weld 304 stainless steel to mild steel with a single stick electrode, and does that electrode still need to be AWS E309L-16 in 2026? Four decades after E309/E309L-16 was standardised, the answer from major electrode suppliers has not shifted.

 

Why does welding stainless to carbon steel still rely on E309L-16?

 

The chromium or nickel content in standard 308 series welding materials is insufficient to counteract the dilution effect from the carbon steel side in dissimilar metal joints. E309L-16 electrodes are specifically designed for such dilution conditions, producing a weld metal with a fully austenitic microstructure (containing 23% chromium and 13% nickel, with a maximum carbon content of 0.04%); the weld retains this austenitic structure even when up to 30% of the weld pool composition originates from the low-carbon steel.[1] Grainger classifies Lincoln Electric's 309/309L-16 as a general-purpose stainless steel electrode; it is compatible with both AC and DCEP power sources and supports all-position welding-a rare combination of characteristics in the field of dissimilar metal welding.

Is the low-carbon variant really necessary?

 

For applications involving room-temperature service after welding, the standard E309-16 (C ≤ 0.15) offers sufficient metallurgical properties. However, if the joint requires post-weld heat treatment above approximately 370°C or exposure to wet corrosive media, the low-carbon grade E309L-16 (C ≤ 0.04) should be selected to avoid the risks of sensitization and sigma (σ) phase formation.
