Both ENiCu-A and ENiCu-B appear in AWS A5.15 as nickel-copper welding electrodes for cast iron. They look similar on paper, and many welders use them interchangeably - but there are meaningful differences that affect performance and cost.
1. Chemistry Differences
The main distinction lies in the copper and iron content of the weld deposit:
- ENiCu-A: lower iron, tighter copper range - traditionally viewed as the "premium" grade
- ENiCu-B: higher iron tolerance and slightly different copper range - more economical while still delivering nickel-copper performance
Both are dominated by nickel + copper (typically 50–60 % Ni, 35–45 % Cu), with the balance being iron and controlled minor elements.
2. Weld Metal Behavior
- ENiCu-A tends to give a cleaner deposit with slightly better color match on gray iron
- ENiCu-B produces a slightly harder, slightly stronger deposit due to higher iron, still fully machinable in most cases
3. Cost and Availability
ENiCu-B is generally more cost-effective than ENiCu-A while covering the same core applications, which is why it is more widely stocked by global cast iron repair shops.
4. When to Choose Which
- Choose ENiCu-A when strict color match, low iron dilution tolerance, or specific customer specifications require it
- Choose ENiCu-B for general cast iron repair, buttering, and dissimilar joints where cost and machinability are both important
