ER312 is commonly listed for joining stainless steel to mild steel and other dissimilar-metal combinations. Washington Alloy identifies stainless-to-mild-steel joints, high-strength steels and AISI 304 clad stainless among its typical ER312 applications . Lincoln Electric similarly describes ER312 for dissimilar metals and difficult-to-weld materials .
The answer is not simply "yes" for every joint. The correct filler depends on the exact stainless grade, carbon-steel grade, thickness, dilution, service environment and applicable code. A joint exposed to high temperature, chemicals or cyclic loading may require a different filler-metal evaluation than a general fabrication connection.
Before welding, clean both surfaces and remove oil, paint, scale and other contaminants. Confirm the joint design, fit-up, preheat and interpass controls in the qualified welding procedure. Excessive dilution can change the weld-metal chemistry, while poor shielding or contamination may increase porosity and reduce corrosion performance.
ER312 may be used in TIG/GTAW rod form and in bare-wire GMAW/MIG applications, depending on the supplier's product range. For TIG, a major ER312 reference specifies 100% argon; MIG gas and parameters must follow the supplied product data and approved WPS . Generic settings from another manufacturer should not be copied without qualification.
A practical procurement request should include both parent-metal grades, thickness, welding process, position, required diameter, service environment, estimated quantity and certificate requirements. Dayang buyers should also request the current ER312 TDS and MTC so the ordered batch can be reviewed before production.
