ER312 is a high-alloy stainless steel filler metal commonly considered for demanding repair welding, dissimilar-metal joints and hard-to-weld steels. Manufacturer references list applications that include carbon steels, spring steels, tool and die steels, high-strength steels, cast alloys and selected buildup work .
The main reason repair teams consider ER312 is its combination of high tensile strength, wear resistance and resistance to weld-metal cracking. Its weld deposit contains ferrite within an austenitic matrix, which can help the deposit tolerate dilution from some austenitic alloying elements . This does not eliminate the need for joint preparation, heat-input control or procedure qualification.
For maintenance work, the base metal should be identified whenever possible.
