Difference Between MIG And TIG Welding

Differences between TIG welding and MIG welding: TIG welding is non consumable inert gas arc welding, while MAG welding is consumable active gas arc welding. Argon arc welding is often referred to as TIG welding. Gas shielded welding belongs to MIG welding or MAG welding according to the type of shielding gas.

TIG welding is usually used for backing welding of pressure vessels by adding filler wire to TIG welding, because the gas tightness of TIG welding is good, which can reduce the porosity of welds when welding pressure vessels. The heat source of TIG welding is DC arc, the working voltage is 10~95 V, but the current can reach 600 A. The correct connection mode of the welding machine is that the workpiece is connected to the positive pole of the power supply, and the tungsten electrode in the welding torch is used as the negative pole. The inert gas is generally argon.

MIG welding is an electric arc welding method that uses the melting electrode, uses the external gas as the arc medium, and protects the metal droplets, welding pool and high temperature metal in the welding area. It is called MIG welding. Inert gas (Ar or He) arc welding with solid wire is called MIG welding.

1, TIG is a kind of non consumable inert gas welding, which uses the arc between the tungsten electrode and the workpiece to melt the metal and form the weld. The tungsten electrode does not melt during welding and only acts as an electrode. At the same time, argon is sent into the nozzle of the welding torch for protection. Additional metals can also be added as needed. It is commonly referred to as TIG welding.

Non consumable electrode inert gas arc welding is an excellent method for connecting sheet metal and backing welding because it can control heat input well. This method can be used for joining metals, especially for welding aluminum, magnesium, which can form refractory oxides, and active metals such as titanium and zirconium. The weld quality of this welding method is high, but the welding speed is slow.

2, MIG welding uses the burning arc between the continuously fed welding wire and the workpiece as the heat source, and the inert gas shielded arc from the torch nozzle is used for welding.

The commonly used shielding gas for MIG welding is argon, helium or a mixture of these gases. When argon or helium is used as shielding gas, it is called MIG welding.

The main advantage of GMAW is that it can be easily welded at various positions, and it also has the advantages of fast welding speed and high deposition rate.

MIG welding is applicable to stainless steel, aluminum, magnesium, copper, titanium, zirconium and nickel alloys. This welding method can also be used for arc spot welding.
