At 1430 UTC on December 13, a container ship was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea, about 48 nautical miles southwest of Guinea. The security consulting company Dryad Global initially reported that 6 crew members were missing, and later revised it to a maximum of 9 crew members being kidnapped.

According to reports, a container ship named "WADI ALRAYAN" with a capacity of 3013 TEU had a container stack collapse near Alexandria, Egypt, causing damage to the container and some of the containers falling into the water.
