Why Does ER318 Welding Wire Contain Niobium?

Niobium is one of the defining alloying elements in ER318 stainless steel welding wire. Its primary purpose is stabilization rather than simply increasing the strength of the weld metal.

How Niobium Stabilization Works

During welding and subsequent thermal exposure, carbon may combine with chromium to form chromium carbides. Under certain conditions, this can reduce chromium around grain boundaries and make the material more vulnerable to intergranular corrosion.

Niobium has a strong affinity for carbon. By forming niobium carbides, it helps reduce the amount of carbon available to combine with chromium. This is why ER318 is commonly described as a niobium-stabilized stainless steel filler metal.

ER318 specifies niobium in relation to its carbon content, with an applicable range of 8×C up to 1.00%. A representative ER318 composition may contain 0.027% carbon and 0.41% niobium.

Why Does ER318 Also Contain Molybdenum?

ER318 contains 2.0–3.0% molybdenum. This distinguishes it from stabilized stainless fillers that do not contain the same molybdenum level.

Molybdenum is valuable when the matched base material or engineering specification requires a Mo-bearing weld deposit. However, its presence does not make the weld universally resistant to every chemical or chloride environment.

Does Niobium Guarantee Corrosion Resistance?

No. Corrosion performance also depends on:

  • Base-metal grade
  • Weld dilution
  • Heat input
  • Interpass temperature
  • Shielding quality
  • Joint cleanliness
  • Post-weld surface treatment
  • Chemical concentration and temperature

Niobium stabilization is one element of the overall welding solution. It cannot compensate for an unsuitable filler, poor procedure, contaminated shielding, or an incorrectly selected base material.

When Should Buyers Specify ER318?

ER318 may be appropriate when the design or welding procedure requires:

  • AWS A5.9 ER318 filler metal
  • A stabilized Cr-Ni-Mo weld deposit
  • Compatibility with matching stabilized stainless steel
  • Controlled molybdenum and niobium chemistry

Dayang Welding recommends confirming the complete service conditions and welding procedure before selecting ER318 for a corrosion-related project.
