Learn when ER318 may be selected for stabilized Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steels and which base-metal, corrosion, temperature, and code factors matter.
ER318 should be selected when the base material, welding procedure, or engineering specification requires a niobium-stabilized Cr-Ni-Mo stainless filler.
Start With the Base Material
Confirm the full grade, product standard, condition, and stabilization method. Do not select ER318 merely because the base metal contains chromium, nickel, and molybdenum.
Review the Service Environment
Consider:
- Chemical medium
- Concentration
- Chloride level
- Operating temperature
- Cleaning cycle
- Pressure
- Thermal cycling
- Required service life
Check the Governing Requirements
The project may specify AWS A5.9, another consumable standard, an approved WPS/PQR, ferrite limits, corrosion testing, or additional inspection.
When Might Another Filler Be Better?
ER316L may be more appropriate for low-carbon 316L base metal. Another stabilized filler may match a different base alloy. Nickel-based wire may be required for severe corrosion or dissimilar service.
What Purchasing Information Is Needed?
Provide classification, diameter, product form, quantity, packaging, destination, documentation, and any chemistry restrictions.
Dayang Welding supports ER318 inquiries by aligning supply information with the customer's actual material and project requirements.
