What Is ER312 Welding Wire Used For?

Learn where ER312 welding wire is used, including dissimilar-metal joints, difficult steels, buttering layers, and maintenance repair applications.

ER312 is a high-alloy stainless steel welding wire classified under AWS A5.9. Its nominal 29Cr-9Ni deposit contains a high proportion of ferrite, giving the weld metal strong resistance to hot cracking under dilution and restraint.

What Are the Main ER312 Applications?

ER312 is commonly considered for:

  • Stainless steel joined to carbon or low-alloy steel
  • Difficult-to-weld and unidentified steels
  • Tool, die, spring, and cast-steel repair
  • Buttering layers before final welding
  • Buildup on components requiring a strong deposit
  • Maintenance jobs involving mixed or uncertain materials

Its ability to tolerate dilution makes it useful when a conventional matching stainless filler might form a crack-sensitive weld-metal structure.

Why Is ER312 Useful for Dissimilar Welding?

During dissimilar welding, elements from both base metals enter the molten pool. This can change the deposit's ferrite balance and increase cracking risk. ER312 starts with high chromium and ferrite, providing a wider compositional margin under demanding dilution conditions.

That does not mean it is automatically correct for every dissimilar joint. ER309L is often preferred for routine stainless-to-carbon-steel fabrication, while nickel-alloy fillers may be required for elevated-temperature or severe corrosion service.

What Should Be Confirmed Before Welding?

Confirm the base metals, service temperature, corrosion environment, joint restraint, preheat, heat input, and applicable procedure. Hardenable steels may require preheating and controlled cooling even when ER312 is used.

Dayang Welding supplies ER312 in TIG and MIG formats and supports customers with diameter, packaging, and application discussions based on project requirements.
