Should You Choose ER312 TIG Or MIG Wire?

The choice between ER312 TIG rod and ER312 MIG wire depends on joint size, access, deposition-rate requirements, surface control and the approved welding procedure. TIG/GTAW generally offers precise heat and filler control, while MIG/GMAW can provide higher productivity when the joint and equipment are suitable. The same ER312 classification does not mean that TIG and MIG parameters are interchangeable.
Lincoln Electric presents ER312 as a TIG/GTAW tungsten inert gas rod and specifies 100% argon for that product reference . Midalloy separately describes ER312 bare wire for both GMAW and GTAW and publishes different process parameters for each method . This distinction shows why buyers should confirm the exact product form and technical data before ordering.
TIG is often considered when the joint is difficult to access, the weld appearance matters, or the welder needs close control over dilution and bead placement. It may suit smaller repairs, root passes and applications requiring careful filler addition. The final current, voltage, travel speed and diameter should be selected from the product TDS and WPS.
MIG may be considered when the fabrication team needs a higher deposition rate or when repeated production joints justify mechanized or semi-automatic welding. Shielding-gas composition, transfer mode, wire diameter, stick-out and voltage can strongly affect penetration, spatter and weld-metal chemistry. A gas recommendation from another brand should not be assumed to apply to Dayang ER312 wire.
Buyers should specify the process, product form, diameter, parent metals, position, estimated quantity, gas availability and documentation requirements. Dayang's broad welding-material portfolio and factory production capabilities can support a supplier discussion, but the correct choice should be finalized with a current TDS and qualified WPS.
