Is ER308L Flux Core?

1. Basic Classification and Structure

ER308L is a solid welding wire, classified as ER308L by AWS (American Society for Welding) standards, belonging to category A5.9 (solid welding wire).

Solid welding wire does not contain flux and must be used with a shielding gas (such as pure CO₂ or a mixture) during welding. It is commonly used in MIG/TIG welding processes.

2. Corresponding Grades of Flux-Cored Wire

If flux-cored wire is required, select models such as E308LT-1, E308LT0-1, and E308LT1-1. These conform to the AWS A5.22 (Fluid-Cored Wire) standard.

Fluid-cored wire is filled with flux, which generates a protective atmosphere during welding. Some models even achieve self-shielding (no external gas required).

3. Key Differences

item ER308L (Solid Welding Wire) E308LT-1 (Fluid-cored welding wire)
structure Solid, without internal flux Tubular shape, containing flux
Protection methods External protective gas is required. Self-protection can be achieved through flux or by using a co-existing gas.

Typical uses MIG/TIG welded stainless steel Gas shielded welding and all-position welding are suitable for on-site construction.

4. Usage Recommendations

If you need solid welding wire, choose ER308L directly;

If you need flux-cored welding wire, choose models such as E308LT-1, E308LT0-1, or E308LT1-1, and confirm its protection method (gas shielded or self-shielded).
